Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) The history of H.B.T.I., Kanpur, dates back to the growing realization of the need for advancement in science and technology among the people of what was then called the United Provinces. To boost entrepreneurship, accelerate industrial development, to create a sound environment for contemporary applied research and to inculcate scientific and technical temper, an Institute called `Government Research Institute, Cawnpore' was started in 1920. On 25th of November, 1921 the then Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, K.C.S.I., C.I.E., formally laid the foundation of the present building. PROGRAMS
Admissions to undergraduate courses are made through a Combined Entrance Examination, admissions to MCA courses are also made through an Entrance Examination whereas admissions to M.Tech. courses are given to GATE- qualified and sponsored candidates only.
The admissions to undergraduate courses in Chemical Technology, viz., Biochemical Engineering, Food Technology, Oil Technology, Paint Technology, and Plastic Technology as well as M.Tech. courses in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology are made on all India basis.
All the undergraduate and postgraduate courses running at the Institute are duly recognized by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
H.B.T.I is totally financed by the State Government for its undergraduate courses. The postgraduate courses in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology are financed by the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP)
The National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (INSTEDB), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India in conjunction with the All India Financial Institution and State Agencies like the UPCST and Industrial Department have established a Science & Technology Park at the institute in the year 1986. The STEP-HBTI conducts Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps (EAC) and Entrepreneurship Motivation Training (EMT) for the students of the institute. Skill oriented training courses for the unemployed youths are conducted in the field of plastics and food etc. Entrepreneurship Development Programs (EDP) have been conducted.
